Non-Violent Bodies (work in progress)

Exploration of the 1990s, reflecting the tension between the idea of nonviolence and the brutality of Nazi skinheads, which triggered a wave of counter-violence from antifascists. At a time when part of society believed that history had ended and that the political nature of everyday life had dissolved into the neoliberal dream of the free market and individualist competition, members of the antifascist movement closely monitored the activities of right-wing extremists and neo-Nazi skinheads and often chose counter-violence. The decision to defend oneself (and society’s rejected membership) emerges as a field of tension between the European fantasy of nonviolence and the lived reality of physical confrontation.
