TWENTYone presents Ibsen’s Nora of the 21st century, seen twenty different ways. It raises questions of identity as a woman, a creative person, and a mother who refuses to be trapped in a “dollhouse.”
Directors from Prague, Nairobi, and Ukraine bring their real life experiences to the character. They explore how the still-relevant theme of Ibsen’s drama resonates in their cultural environments and artistic practices.
It starts with examining the limitations that creative women often experience in life – lack of time, space, economic constraints. Each author is given two days to rehearse and create with Miřenka Čechová a two-minute performative segment. As a result, performer’s body thus becomes a living document, a catalogue of twenty different directorial approaches – in the spirit of Marina Abramović’s legendary performance Rhythm 0.
TWENTYone is a performative anthology of women’s voices. Present-day voices that have long confronted the social space, bringing new perspectives and bold ideas to the notion of womanhood.
The performance will be followed by a discussion with guests Nela Winkler and Miřenka Čechová. The discussion will be moderated by Anna Prstková and will be held in English.
